Maternal Journal Groups

These facilitated groups are a safe place for you to explore the joys and challenges of this new phase of life. The transition to motherhood, often called 'Matrescence' is a time of huge change.

Just like in Adolescence, Matrescence brings unsettling hormonal and brain changes, this time so that we can better attune to and take care of our babies. There are also changes in our daily circumstances, identity, relationships and financial independence. Gender inequality and resentment can rear up out of nowhere. Our emotional landscape can seem newly complex and out of control. We often reflect on our own childhoods and question how we can do things differently. It's a lot!

Spaces to talk about these subjects in daily life can be few and far between. At Baby Umbrella we are passionate about creating them. In these groups, we listen for the real answer behind the 'how are you'? These are places where you can feel safe to explore your experiences, be seen and be understood.

What is Maternal Journal?

Maternal Journal groups provide a welcoming space for mothers and birthing people to engage in creative exercises and share their stories.

Based on the established 'Maternal Journal' model and facilitated by our experienced practitioners, we'll support you to explore various creative forms like doodling, collaging and poetry. The focus is on the process, not the end result and no artistic skills are necessary!

Journaling and crafting have long been powerful tools particularly for women, helping you check in on your feelings, understand triggers, and document your daily experiences. The act of journaling can be cathartic and empowering.

We offer regular free taster sessions if you want to see what a Maternal Journal group is like, and we also offer several four week courses each year in various locations available on a 'pay what you can' basis. Children under 1 year old are welcome to attend with you.

Maternal Journal Testimonials

"The best thing I have done on maternity leave. I looked forward to every session and always felt better afterwards. Jennie created a safe space where we could share our honest feelings and experiences as mothers and guided us all to lift each other up with self-compassion. The creative exercises were calming and gave me a wonderful way to go deeper into my feelings as a new mother and process this new part of my life."

FAQs

Who is Maternal Journal for?

These groups are open to all mothers and birthing people, whatever the age of your baby or child. The creative exercise is completed individually so you can take it in whatever direction feels right, and there are always both things you can relate to in the sharing, as well as so much that is different.

Can I bring my baby to the groups?

Under 1 year old babies are welcome in the groups, but over 1s are not permitted. This is so you are able to focus on yourself and can express yourself without them overhearing.
